Book trading!

A while ago I posted a list of books that I have to trade. I update the post as I get new books and I have a link above my posts for the actual trading list. Since I posted the list I have gotten maybe one or two emails about trading and I don't think it's really easy to see what I have to trade. Is there something you guys would recommend doing to draw more attention to my list? I would really love to clear out some of my duplicate books and get some new ones that I want to read.

Any ideas would be helpful and if you want to trade comment or email me! =]

Bleeding Violet by Dia Reeves

Book: Bleeding Violet by Dia Reeves

Release date: January 5, 2010

Publisher: Simon and Schuster

From: Publisher

Summary:
Love can be a dangerous thing....
Hanna simply wants to be loved. With a head plagued by hallucinations, a medicine cabinet full of pills, and a closet stuffed with frilly, violet dresses, Hanna's tired of being the outcast, the weird girl, the freak. So she runs away to Portero, Texas in search of a new home.

But Portero is a stranger town than Hanna expects. As she tries to make a place for herself, she discovers dark secrets that would terrify any normal soul. Good thing for Hanna, she's far from normal. As this crazy girl meets an even crazier town, only two things are certain: Anything can happen and no one is safe.
*****
Bleeding Violet is a very strange book. I can safely say that is is the weirdest book I have ever read. Of course, I mean that in the best possible way because the book rocked. It was so good!

Hanna is new to Portero and she doesn't fit in but that's nothing new. Hanna is used to being a freak among normal people. What she isn't used to is being a freak among other freaks. Pretty soon Hanna finds out that she may be one of the most normal people in Portero. Hanna can't help but wonder, what makes the Porterenes so unusual?

I am in love with Bleeding Violet. Everything about it stands out as unique in today's paranormal YA market. In a world inhabited by tons of teen vampire novels, Bleeding Violet will definitely take readers by surprise. The creatures in this book are so creepy and fantastical and unlike anything I have ever read about. I would love more books to be like this one!

Dia Reeves' debut novel is wonderfully written and beautifully crafted. She incorporated such real issues as mental instability with amazingly unreal creatures and happenings. When I started the book I didn't expect to devour it as quickly as I did and I definitely didn't expect to love it so much!

Overall, Bleeding Violet is a book that needs to be added to everyone's to-read lists if it isn't already there. I can't wait for more from debut novelist, Dia Reeves. Her name is going to be added to my list of debut novelists to watch out for and that list is quickly growing as I tackle the debut author challenge. =]

Waiting On Wednesday: Radiance

Book: Radiance by Alyson Noel

Release date: August 31, 2010

Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin

Summary:Welcome to the Here and Now.

Riley Bloom left her sister, Ever, in the world of the living and crossed the bridge into the afterlife—a place called Here, where time is always Now. Riley and her dog, Buttercup, have been reunited with her parents and are just settling into a nice, relaxing death when she’s summoned before The Council. They let her in on a secret—the afterlife isn’t just an eternity of leisure; Riley has to work. She’s been assigned a job, Soul Catcher, and a teacher, Bodhi, a curious boy she can’t quite figure out.

Riley, Bodhi, and Buttercup return to earth for her first assignment, a Radiant Boy who’s been haunting a castle in England for centuries. Many Soul Catchers have tried to get him to cross the bridge and failed. But he’s never met Riley...

My reasons for wanting to read this:
1-I have read the Immortals series and I loved Riley. She wasn't mentioned much in the books but she seemed fun and I think it will be cool to learn more about her.
2-While the last book in the Immortals series wasn't too good, the others were. I really like Alyson Noel's writing.
3- The cover is pretty and the book comes out on my brother's birthday. Maybe I can convince him to get me a present for his birthday. =]

The Good Girl's Guide To Getting Kidnapped by Yxta Maya Murray

Book: The Good Girl's Guide To Getting Kidnapped by Yxta Maya Murray

Release date: January 7, 2010

Publisher: Razorbill

From: Trade

Summary:
Kiki and Mish are best friends, but what Kiki doesn’t know is that Michelle Pena was born a gang princess. “Princess P” grew up destined to inherit leadership of the Snakes: a future filled with crime and fear. Michelle, on the other hand, is a nationally ranked athlete and academic superstar. This is her new life, and she’s finally put her past—and her childhood love for Silver—to rest.

Then Silver helps kidnap both girls, and Michelle has to figure out how to free them both—and reconnect with a future that might now be beyond her reach.

*****
I have to say that The Good Girl's Guide To Getting Kidnapped is unlike anything I have read before. That is both parts good and bad. It's a very unique story and well-written but I'm kind of mixed in my feelings for it.

The Good Girl's Guide To Getting Kidnapped is the story of Michelle Pena, former gang princess of Montebello. Her life seems to be looking up until she and her best friend, Kiki, are kidnapped and held for ransom. Things get real crazy, real quick and Michelle has to make a decision. Will she give up everything she has ever known and the one boy she has ever loved to go back to her normal life or will she choose to be Princess P?

The good thing about the book was that it kept me hooked. There was always something going on which made the book really easy to read. Also, Yxta Maya Murray kept me guessing until the very end about what path Michelle might choose.

The things that I didn't like about the book weren't that major but they do kind of nag at me. The ending seemed pretty open. It's like the author doesn't know if she wants to write a sequel so she left it like that so if she wants to in the future, she can. Also, the slang was a little trying. The way Michelle talked to the other gang members got on my nerves after a while. I know it goes with the story but it was a little bit forced, it didn't come natural to Michelle. It was like she was trying too hard to impress the boys.

Overall, The Good Girl's Guide To Getting Kidnapped was entertaining, if nothing else. It's a good book if you are just looking for something that doesn't require a ton of thinking. In the end, I would recommend it!

Bookish Finds!

I found a couple book related things that I really wanted to share with you guys.

First, the cover for Dark Flame has been released by Alyson Noel. While I didn't like the last book in the series, I will be reading this one. Dark Flame will be released in the US on July 7 of this year. I really like the cover but that doesn't surprise me. So far I have liked all the covers. =]

Thank you Dani from YA All The Way for posting about this, otherwise I probably wouldn't have known.

Next, is about a book that I have seen around the blogosphere lately that looks pretty interesting. It's called A House Afire and it is a debut YA book by Emma Kinna. Here's the summary and cover:
Phyllis Sorin has seen all sorts of people. With two kind Aunts who rent out the rooms of their house to anyone in need, the people she calls family are a little different from most. There’s Bill, who takes on the personalities of movie characters. There’s Quincy, whose best friend is a drag queen. There’s Anna, an opera singer and kung-fu master.
And Phyllis, well, she’s not exactly normal herself. But even as she begins to navigate high school’s social jungle, Phyllis finds comfort and humor in her odd home.
When Dominick Siddons moves in, however, all of Phyllis's priorities become inferior to finding out his secret. A young lawyer with a vicious wit and ferocious temper, Sid may understand Phyllis in a way no one else can. And through truth and fiction, through the inevitable chaos of the house, Phyllis finds much more than she bargained for.

Last but not least, Steph Su is having an awesome contest on her blog Steph Su Reads. It's her blogoversary giveaway and she is giving away some amazing books that I am super excited about. It's open internationally and it ends on Feb 28 so go enter here.

The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard

Book: The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard

Release date: January 7, 2010

Publisher: Viking Juvenile

From: Publisher

Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Colt has been sneaking out at night to meet Julia, a girl from an upper-class neighborhood unlike his own. They’ve never told anyone else about their relationship: not their family or friends, and especially not Julia’s boyfriend. When Julia dies suddenly, Colt tries to cope with her death while pretending that he never even knew her. He discovers a journal she left behind. But he is not prepared for the truths he discovers about their intense relationship, nor to pay the price for the secrets he’s kept.
*****
Amazing! That is the first word that pops into my head to describe The Secret Year. I'm sure there are plenty of others that I could think of but that is the first word that comes to me. The Secret Year was an absolutely brilliant book.

The Secret Year is the story of Colt Morrissey, a guy from the flats. It's also the story of Julia Vernon, a girl from Black Mountain Road. Those two types of people don't mix, at least not well but for a year that's what Colt and Julia did, up to the day that Julia was killed. Now Colt is the one person left who knows their secret. At least, that's what he thinks, until he gets the journal. Julia's journal, all about their time together.

The Secret Year is super unique seeing as it's told from a guy's point-of-view. Until recently I hadn't read many books like that and the ones that I had read I didn't like. They seem to be popping up more often in YA literature these days and the ones that I have read are wonderfully written. Jennifer Hubbard did a spectacular job with this story. Seeing as it's all about love and relationships and sex, I didn't expect it to be very good told from a guy. Surprisingly, it made it even better. It wasn't vulgar or crude. It was beautifully done.

Overall, The Secret Year is a book I think everyone should read. Jennifer Hubbard is a debut novelist that I will definitely be on the lookout for in the future. The Secret Year has been added to my list of all time favorite books and if you give it a shot, maybe yours too.

Happy 1 year Blogoversary!

Today is my one year blogoversary. I can honestly say that I when I started my blog last year, I wasn't sure I would keep it up. I didn't really have a clue what I was doing and I wasn't sure if I would even be good at it. Now I feel so different. I don't know what I would do without my blog and all the people in the blogging community. I still don't know if I am any good at this but it is something that I truly enjoy and I am looking forward to many more years. =]

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped me out over the past year and to every one of my followers!

Hmm, where to start this week? I am so excited to read Before I Fall. Ever since I first heard about it, I have been intrigued and I finally have a copy. As to the books from my trade, all I have to say is that Kelsey is AMAZING! She was so awesome and got me some ARC's from The Strand and I don't know which one to start with. I love the cover for Perchance To Dream. It's definitely as pretty as Eyes Like Stars, maybe even prettier. Also, I have been really lucky with contests lately and I got some of my wins this week. Then of course I had to buy some. =]

Just a quick note to anybody who trades books, I would love for you to check out my trading list. I updated it today and I would love to clear out some old books and get some new ones. The wishlist that is on the post is not my full one so if you don't have anything on that list, it's okay. I do except other books, all you need to do is email me with a list of books that you have to trade and the books that you are interested in.

The Girl With The Mermaid Hair by Delia Ephron

Book: The Girl With The Mermaid Hair by Delia Ephron

Release date: January 5, 2010

Publisher: HarperTeen

From: Publisher

Summary:
Sukie Jamieson is obsessed with her appearance. She checks her reflection in windows, spoons, car chrome—anything available. So when her mother gives her a full-length mirror that once belonged to her grandmother, Sukie is thrilled. So thrilled that she doesn’t listen to her mother’s warning: "This mirror will be your best friend and worst enemy.” Because mirrors, as Sukie discovers, show not only the faraway truth but the truth close up. And finding out that close-up truth changes people. Often forever.

*****
I don't know how to say this nicely so I'm just going to say it honestly. I hated The Girl With The Mermaid Hair. I couldn't get into the story and I couldn't get past the main character's personality.

The Girl With The Mermaid Hair is the story of Sukie Jamieson. From the very beginning I knew I wasn't going to like Sukie. All she cared about was herself. She was obsessed with the way she looked and she was so full of herself. A major part of the book was Sukie talking about how gorgeous she was. One of my problems is that if I don't like a main character, I don't like the book. Obviously this caused a problem for this book.

I would go into the plot but I don't know what it was. There wasn't a whole lot going on in the book. At first I thought there might be some romance to the story but it didn't pan out. In the end Sukie did a little growing but not enough to redeem the book.

Overall, The Girl With The Mermaid Hair is one book I won't be recommending. I hate to write such a negative review but this was not a good book for me. If you are at all interested in it, check it out from the library but don't waste your money.

Waiting On Wednesday: The Summer Of Skinny Dipping

Book: The Summer Of Skinny Dipping by Amanda Howells

Release date: June 2010

Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire

Summary:
After getting dumped by her boyfriend, sixteen-year-old Mia Gordon is looking forward to spending a relaxing summer in the Hamptons with her glamorous cousins. But when she arrives, her cousins are distant, moody, and caught up with a fast crowd. Mia finds herself lonelier than ever. That's when she meets her next-door-neighbor, Simon Ross. Simon isn't like the snobby party boys her cousins seem obsessed with; he's funny, artistic, and utterly adventurous. And from the very first time he encourages Mia to go skinny-dipping, she's caught up in a current impossible to resist. Timeless in feel, The Summer of Skinny-Dipping is a poignant, literary read sure to dazzle tweens and teens alike.

Why I want to read this book now:
1-It sounds cute. It doesn't seem like it will be a really deep book and sometimes light is just what you need.
2-It sounds summery. Right now it's cold and gloomy outside and I could go for some fun in the sun. I guess if I can't get it, I can at least read about it.
3-I haven't heard anything about it yet. Sometimes that's bad but sometimes I like reading books that I haven't read reviews for. =]

The Iron King Trailer!

So, I just saw this and I had to share it with you guys. It's so amazing. I have to say that it's one of the best trailers I have seen. I can't wait for the book to be released. It's one that I am going to have to rush out and buy!

What do you guys think?

Teaser Tuesday: Wondrous Strange

* Grab your current read.
* Let the book fall to a random page.
* Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.
* Share the title of the book that you're getting your teaser from... That way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you've given!
* Please avoid spoilers!

From page 2 of Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston:
After centuries spent imprisoned , locked in the chains of uneasy, enchanted sleep, the Wild Hunt was awake.

Obviously I just started this. Kelsey finally convinced me that it was past time I read this and after very little protest, I gave in. I love anything involving fairies and this one sounds different than the few other fairy books that I have read so I can't wait to really start reading it. Hopefully it won't take me very long to get into the story.

What are you reading this Tuesday?

Book Expo America!

This is a totally random post but I really want to know about some bloggers who are planning on going to BEA this May. I want to go this year but I have to convince my parents and any information about it would be helpful. People who went last year, I would love info from you guys!

You can comment here or even email me at katieb206 at gmail dot com. I love chatting and I really want to meet some other bloggers this May if I end up going.

Boys, Girls, and Other Hazardous Materials by Rosalind Wiseman

Book: Boys, Girls, and Other Hazardous Materials by Rosalind Wiseman

Release date: January 12, 2010

Publisher: Putnam Juvenile

From: Publisher

Summary:
Looking for a new beginning after a terrible mean girl past, Charlie Healey realizes there’s no escaping high school drama

Charlie Healey thinks Harmony Falls is the beginning of a whole new life. Middle school was brutal. But high school is Charlie’s big chance to start over and stay out of drama, except that on her first day she runs into Will, her ex–best friend, who had moved away. Now a varsity athlete and hotter than Charlie
remembered, Will hangs with the crowd running the school. But Charlie doesn’t understand their power until an innocent delivery guy falls victim to a near-deadly hazing prank.

Torn between doing what’s right and her secret feelings for Will, Charlie must decide whether to turn in her very best friend or live with the guilt of knowing what he did.

*****
I don't exactly know how to start this review. I enjoyed the book overall but it was pretty predictable. I wasn't shocked by anything that happened and I didn't think the story was anything spectacular. Then again, I did read it all in pretty much one sitting so that means it was good enough to keep me reading.

Charlotte "Charlie" Healy has had enough of mean girls. In fact, she's had so much she decided to change schools to get away from them. Her new school seems to be great. It's more advanced, has a better school paper, new friends, and some way cute boys. Charlie couldn't have asked for a better freshman year of high school. All that changes when she witnesses a shocking act one night made by someone she truly trusted. What is Charlie to do, let it slide to help her friend or do the right thing and let them face the consequences?

The story of Boys, Girls, and Other Hazardous Materials was cute. Like I said, I wasn't surprised by anything that happened but it was written well enough that I could still enjoy the book. And yes there was a message to the book which always helps, in my opinion.

I think what really helped make the book so good was the characters. Charlie, Sydney, Nidhi, Will, and Michael were all so great. Sometimes I just couldn't help but laugh at the way they acted and it made me think that they were the kind of people I would want as friends. I admit that Charlie seemed kind of wimpy at first but she eventually grew a backbone. =]

Overall, this was a very cute chick-lit book. It was a quick read and a good one. I totally recommend it to fans of the genre!

By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters

Book: By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters

Release date: January 5, 2010

Publisher: Hyperion Book

From: Publisher

Summary:
Daelyn Rice is broken beyond repair, and after a string of botched suicide attempts, she's determined to get her death right. She starts visiting a website for "completers"- www.through-the-light.com.

While she's on the site, Daelyn blogs about her life, uncovering a history of bullying that goes back to kindergarten. When she's not on the Web, Daelyn's at her private school, where she's known as the freak who doesn't talk.

Then, a boy named Santana begins to sit with her after school while she's waiting to for her parents to pick her up. Even though she's made it clear that she wants to be left alone, Santana won't give up. And it's too late for Daelyn to be letting people into her life. Isn't it?

*****
I knew going into this that it was going to be a sad book but I had no clue it would be so depressing. I just can't get past how saw the book was and how honest it was. I think that's the real hard part.

Daelyn Rice feels that she has no reason to live. She has no friends, no confidence, nothing left to live for. When she finds throughthelight.com it just helps solidify her plan. All the people on the site are like her and she can finally tell someone about everything that has happened to her. She knows that once she gets everything out she will finally be ready to end her life. Then Santana comes along and changes everything.

I liked Santana way more than Daelyn. He so clearly loved life and had no problems with the fact that Daelyn wasn't a normal girl. He accepted her the way she was. Daelyn, on the other hand, didn't care about living. I hate to say it but she was kind of pitiful. She gave up. She even admits that she never bothered trying to defend herself. I know that she was bullied by everyone but she could have changed that if she tried.

By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead is depressing in it's honesty. Everything mentioned in those pages happens regularly. Bullying does lead to kids taking their own lives and sometimes all it takes is one person to stop them, one friend.

Overall, By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead was a good book but I can't get past Daelyn's weakness and the end of the book. Now don't think that because I say that I give away the ending because you will really never guess how it ends until you read it. I guess it just shocked me so much and I can't get past it. So yes if this looks like something you might like, give it a shot!

Captivate (Need #2) by Carrie Jones

Book: Captivate (Need #2) by Carrie Jones

Release date: January 5, 2010

Publisher: Bloomsbury USA

From: Publisher

Summary:
Zara and her friends knew they hadn't solved the pixie problem for good. Far from it. The king's needs grow deeper every day he's stuck in captivity, while his control over his people gets weaker. It's made him vulnerable. And now there's a new king in town.

A turf war is imminent, since the new pixie king, Astley, is moving in quickly. Nick nearly killed him in the woods on day one, but Zara came to his rescue. Astley swears that he and Zara are destined to be together, that he's one of the good guys. Nick isn't buying it, though Zara isn't as sure -- despite herself, she wants to trust the new king. But it's a lot more than her relationship with Nick that is at stake. It's her life -- and his.

*****

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't read Need, this review may contain spoilers.

I didn't think it was possible but I may have enjoyed reading Captivate even more than I did Need. It hooked me from page one and I was up late into the night finishing it. I couldn't stop reading!

Captivate starts where Need left off. Zara and her friends are trapping pixies but what they don't know is that more are coming and that they are all in even greater danger, especially Zara. If Zara thought her own father was bad, just wait until she meets the other kings, who want her for their queen.

Captivate was so wonderfully well-written. It flowed really well for me and it made the book even better. Carrie Jones already had me hooked with the story but her writing was the icing on the cake.

I guess the thing that bugs me the most is that there is going to be another book. I don't want to wait to find out what happens to everybody. I want to know now! Then again, if I wasn't complaining about that it would mean that I just didn't care about the next book so maybe this isn't so much complaint as compliment to Carrie Jones! =]

Overall, if you've read Need, go get this and read it as soon as you can. And if you haven't read Need go get that one because both of these are books that I can't praise enough.

Waiting On Wednesday: Jekel Loves Hyde

Book: Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey

Release date: May 3, 2010

Publisher: Harcourt Children's Books

Summary:
Jill Jekel has always obeyed her parents’ rules – especially the one about never opening the mysterious, old box in her father’s office. But when her dad is murdered, and her college savings disappear, she's tempted to peek inside, as the contents might be key to a lucrative chemistry scholarship.

To better her odds, Jill enlists the help of gorgeous, brooding Tristen Hyde, who has his own dark secrets locked away. As the team of Jekel and Hyde, they recreate experiments based on the classic novel, hoping not only to win a prize, but to save Tristen’s sanity. Maybe his life. But Jill’s accidental taste of a formula unleashes her darkest nature and compels her to risk everything – even Tristen’s love – just for the thrill of being… bad.

My reasons for wanting this book terribly:
1-I loved Beth Fantaskey's first novel, Jessica's Guide To Dating On The Dark Side. It was even one of my top books of 2009.
2-The cover is really pretty. I didn't like it at first but after seeing it multiple times, I changed my mind. =]
3-It just sounds interesting and unique. What more could you want in a book?

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

Kimberly Derting Interview & Contest!

Kimberly Derting is the debut author of The Body Finder, set to be released on March 16 of this year from HarperTeen. =]

KBB: Did you always want to be a writer? If not, what did you picture yourself doing?

KD: I fell in love with writing when I signed up for Journalism in the 7th grade. That was when I knew I wanted to be a writer, but I really thought I wanted to be a journalist. Seriously, traipsing through jungles or war-torn regions to get “the scoop” just really wasn’t me. Plus, there are all those facts you have to gather. And truth-telling. It didn’t take long to realize that I way preferred making stuff up.

When I was in college, though, I was very serious about getting into medical school. My undergrad work was primarily in biology, chemistry and mathematics. About halfway through my junior year (right about the time I should have been gearing up to take my MCATs), my husband and I decided to have a baby and I gave up my med-school dreams. So, of course, the obvious alternative was writing.

Fortunately for me (and for our daughter), it all worked out in the end!

KBB: What do you consider the hardest part of writing?

KD: Time. And it’s actually not so much that I have a hard time finding the time to write, that part seems to be relatively easy for me. It’s more that I’ll let everything else go, my household, social obligations, pretty much everything. Thankfully, I have a really supportive family and friends who are very forgiving. They’re also good at reminding me that sometimes I need downtime too.

KBB: What do you consider your strengths and weaknesses as a writer?

KD: One of my big weaknesses is that I’m not an outliner, which makes it nearly impossible to synopsize a novel in advance (which agents and editors tend to like). I really enjoy working on the fly. I pretty much know where my story is going (in fact, I usually have a really good idea how it’s going to end), I just don’t know exactly how I’m going to get there. But that’s half the fun…figuring it out as I go.

My strength is probably that obsessive commitment I mentioned above. I can become completely consumed while I’m writing (like I said, to the exclusion of everything else!). I’d like to think that means I’m passionate about my work!

KBB: Do you have any must-haves while you are writing?

KD: Tea is an absolute must. I would say it’s a necessity of writing, right up there with my laptop and sweatpants. Skittles are good too. Not necessarily a requirement, but a definite bonus.

KBB: How does it feel, knowing that your book will be on shelves in stores in less than 100 days?

KD: Overwhelming. Exciting. Terrifying. Any of those words fit the bill. I can go from giddy to gut-wrenching fear in about five seconds flat. It’s been a little crazy-making!

KBB: Are any of your characters based on people you know?

KD: I joke that they all are to drive my friends crazy. But, seriously, none of them are. There are little characteristics that I “borrow” from friends and family, little inside jokes that I sprinkle in my manuscripts, but overall, the characters are made up. But if they were real, they would totally be the kind of people I’d hang out with (well…except for the serial killer).

KBB: Do you have anything in common with Violet, your main character?

KD: Not really, I guess. Violet is this regular girl with a really creepy ability. I think what’s cool about her is that she doesn’t shy away from it…or on the flip side, she’s not so kickbutt that she comes across as unrealistic and bad-assed. She’s just a girl who doesn’t want to sit around and wait to be rescued.

I’m more the terrified-of-finding-dead-things kind of girl. I just like writing about it.

KBB: What were your top five books of 2009?

KD: Ooh, this is SO tough…and you’re really putting me on the spot. I have WAY more than five, but here are just *some* of my faves (in no particular order): Fragile Eternity (because I’m completely hooked on the Wicked Lovely series. I can’t wait for the next installment!); Leaving Gee’s Bend by Irene Latham (this is a Tenner book that I had the chance to read, and it’s so incredibly awesome! I really can’t say enough about it!!!); The Forest of Hands and Teeth (because, well, you know!); Prada & Prejudice (I’m not usually a chick-lit kind of gal, but I just loved this book! I am dying to read Hubbard’s next book, You Wish); Beautiful Creatures (Okay, so I just started this one, but I don’t think I’m jumping the gun by saying WOW! this book is amazing!). I could just keep going…and going…and going! (Seriously, did you see how many exclamation marks I just used???)

KBB: You are definitely not jumping the gun on BC. It is totally worth being one of your top five. Thanks so much for the interview. I can't wait to read The Body Finder! It sounds spectacular and I guess now I will have to check out the other books that you mentioned.

Readers here is your chance to win some awesome Body Finder swag donated by Kimberly Derting. =]

To be entered just comment on my interview. If you want extras, here's how.

Dawn by Kevin Brooks

Book: Dawn by Kevin Brooks

Release date: December 1, 2009

Publisher: Chicken House

From: Publisher

Summary:
Dawn's dad is a recovering substance abuser, a one-time child molester, and...a born-again Christian. Religion: That's his latest addiction. But as far as Dawn is concerned, the Man Upstairs has robbed her of the father she once loved--drugs, drinks, and all.

Which is why Dawn's gone shopping for Bibles. For research. To know her enemy. Because, to get her old dad back, she's going to have to do away with this God guy.

She'd just better pray that the fallout from her father's past life of crime doesn't catch up to her first.
*****
I hate to be so critical but I don't think there was a single thing I liked about Dawn. I really can't think of one thing right now. It just wasn't a book for me, I guess.

Dawn is the story of a fifteen-year-old girl named Dawn Bundy. She lives with her mother because her father disappeared over two years ago. Ever since then Dawn just hangs out by herself or with her two dogs, Jesus and Mary. She doesn't know why her dad disappeared but she does know that he wasn't the same dad anymore and that it was God's fault. So she decides to kill God.

Well, I can tell you right now that that kind of turned me off the book. I'm not into reading about religion and this one had quite a bit of it, even if it was just her reasons why she was against it. I didn't see how thsi was linked to the plot.

Another thing I couldn't get past was Dawn. She didn't have a personality and I couldn't bring myself to like her. She didn't try to make friends or change the situation she was in. She accepted that that was how things were going to be and lived like that.

The plot was pretty much non-existent until the very end of the book. Dawn just went about her life until at the end of the book something actually happened. I didn't like what happened or the way the book ended. It was weird.

Overall, Dawn is not something I would recommend. It wasn't very well written and it was disturbing to me. I hope Kevin Brooks other books are better than this one.

Revealers by Amanda Marrone

Book: Revealers by Amanda Marrone

Release date: September 30, 2008

Publisher: Simon Pulse

From: Bookstore

Summary:
Witchin' ain't easy.

Jules has a rebellious streak, a massive crush on Connor, and the abilities of a Revealer witch. By day, she and her coven friends seem like typical high school seniors. By night, they have the power to make werewolves, vampires, and ghosts reveal themselves, so they can destroy them. It's not exactly cheerleading, but at least the girls know they're doing the world some good.

One by one, Jules's friends turn eighteen and are initiated into the coven's inner circle. And one by one, they are getting completely freaked out. Jules is the youngest, and though her friends are too scared tell her what's going on, something's clearly not right. As her birthday approaches, Jules realizes she's got to find out what's behind the shadows of her coven before it's too late to save her friends...and herself. But what she discovers may be too powerful for even the toughest witches to defeat.

*****
Revealers was my first Amanda Marrone book and it left me wanting more. And I don't say that in a good way. It just wasn't as good as I expected but I don't think I will give up on her books just yet.

Revealers is the story of Jules, a revealer witch. Being a revealer witch is all she knows but she wants more. Being initiated into the coven at the age of eighteen isn't something she is looking forward to and as the day draws near things start to change. Jules knows that she has to put an end to things, but how?

The story was actually very intriguing. It kept me hooked and I finished it in only a couple of hours but I really kept reading hoping that some of my questions would be answered and they weren't. The ending seemed abrupt and it left me with tons of questions. It left it very open for a sequel but I don't see one in the plans. It also left me questioning how good a person Jules was but I can't go into that without spoiling the book. That's not what I want to be left thinking of a main character.

Also, nothing really seemed to happen until the very end. The whole book led up to this big ending that was pretty anticlimactic for me. The characters were underdeveloped and the plot was just bogus.

Overall, Revealers could have been so much more. It didn't live up to it's potential and it was poorly done. I'd recommend checking this one out from the library if you have any interest in it.

Waiting On Wednesday: A Little Wanting Song

Book: A Little Wanting Song by Cath Crowley

Release date: June 8, 2010

Publisher: Knopf BFYR

Summary:
A summer of friendship, romance, and songs in major chords. . . .

CHARLIE DUSKIN loves music, and she knows she's good at it. But she only sings when she's alone, on the moonlit porch or in the back room at Old Gus's Secondhand Record and CD Store. Charlie's mom and grandmother have both died, and this summer she's visiting her grandpa in the country, surrounded by ghosts and grieving family, and serving burgers to the local kids at the milk bar. She's got her iPod, her guitar, and all her recording equipment, but she wants more: A friend. A dad who notices her. The chance to show Dave Robbie that she's not entirely unspectacular.

ROSE BUTLER lives next door to Charlie's grandfather and spends her days watching cars pass on the freeway and hanging out with her troublemaker boyfriend. She loves Luke but can't wait to leave their small country town. And she's figured out a way: she's won a scholarship to a science school in the city, and now she has to convince her parents to let her go. This is where Charlie comes in. Charlie, who lives in the city, and whom Rose has ignored for years. Charlie, who just might be Rose's ticket out.

Told in alternating voices and filled with music, friendship, and romance, Charlie and Rose's "little wanting song" is about the kind of longing that begins as a heavy ache but ultimately makes us feel hopeful and wonderfully alive.

My reasons for wanting to read this book now:
1-I love anything to do with music and it sounds like this has a little something to do with music. I am kind of like Charlie in the fact that I love to sing but I won't do it where anyone can hear. =]
2-I think the cover is really cool. I really like how the girl's picture is black and white and then there is that splash of color. It's really eye-catching.
3-I know this isn't really a reason for wanting to read a book but one of the characters names is Rose Butler and my name is Katie Rose Butler. I thought that was so cool!

Wanderlust (Beautiful Americans #2) by Lucy Silag

Book: Wanderlust (Beautiful Americans #2) by Lucy Silag

Release date: December 24, 2009

Publisher: Razorbill

From: Publisher

Summary:
Will they save their lost friend before it’s too late?

Angst and betrayal abound as teens search the French countryside for their missing classmate in this exciting sequel to Beautiful Americans.

The book opens with PJ on a train, racing toward Rouen to meet her sister, Annabel. But Annabel’s life may be fraught with troubles far worse than her own.

Alex persuades Jay and Zack to hunt for PJ at one of her absentee father’s ritzy estates in the country. But a painful encounter with her dad leaves Alex weeping—on Jay’s shoulder. Three’s a crowd for Zack; he heads to Amsterdam seeking an old friend, and a place to belong.

Back in Paris, Olivia’s escapades with Thomas are interrupted when they discover reason to believe PJ is in more peril than she knows. Will the crew find PJ in time? Have they lost themselves along the way?

*****

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't read the first book in the trilogy this review may contain spoilers!

Wanderlust starts right where Beautiful Americans left off. It's winter break for the members of the Programme Americaine and that means new adventures for PJ, Alex, Olivia, and Zack. Where Beautiful Americans seemed like there wasn't enough going on, Wanderlust almost had too much going on.

PJ had run away to find her sister leaving nothing but a note behind. The note brings Jay, Alex, Olivia, and Zack together and sends them on a journey across France to rescue PJ. Olivia has to back out but that doesn't stop the other three. They may not find PJ but on the way they sure do discover some interesting things about each other.

What really disappointed me about Wanderlust was the lack of character development. I went into the book hoping to learn more about each of the characters but it didn't really happen. Towards the very end I started to see some maturing but it seemed to be more of an introduction and that more would happen in the next and final book.

Overall, Wanderlust was an entertaining story that left me guessing at what might happen next and what crazy things these teens will do. So far it's a really fun set of books and I can't wait for the next one to be released in the summer!

Beautiful Americans by Lucy Silag

Book: Beautiful Americans by Lucy Silag

Publisher: Razorbill

From: Bookstore

PJ's deep blue eyes and angelic long blond hair conceal a truth that's anything but. Will her dark past stay where it belongs in the backwoods of Vermont, or haunt her in the city of light?

Passion--
Always the good girl, Olivia plans to twirl her way to the top of the Parisian ballet scene. But that's not supposed to include dancing on a table all night...or stumbling into the arms of the wrong boy.

With his emo-trendy bedhead, hilarious comebacks and Southern drawl, Zack could win over anyone. Too bad he's after the only one who's forbidden...

Scandal--
All Alex wants from Paris is to nab that berry-red Dior coat and seduce the perfect penny-loafer-wearing boy - and Alex always gets what she wants. But will her scheming pay off? Or is she risking more than she knows...?

Alex, Olivia, Zack and PJ are spending a year at the prestigious Lycée de Monceau in the sparkling city of Paris. This is their chance to sip cafe au lait in Le Marais, throw secret parties in their host families' Versailles-size apartments, and have the time of their lives. But when the secrets they thought they left behind come out, everything could be ruined...

*****
Beautiful Americans is the first of what promises to be an exciting trilogy. It's the story of four Americans and their wild adventures in Paris for 9 months. This book is just the beginning of some crazy nights and even crazier teens.

Beautiful Americans is told from the points-of-view of Penelope Jane(PJ), Olivia, Zack, and Alex. I don't think there could be any four people as different as these. PJ is a Vermont hippie who is running from quite a past. Olivia is a dancer who is in Paris to try to earn a dance scholarship to UCLA. Zack is Zack. He is kind of hard to describe. He is in Paris looking for himself and for love. Then there's Alex. Alex is the spoiled rotten brat of the group. I couldn't find any redeeming qualities for her. She is in Paris just because she wants to be and what Alex wants, Alex gets.

This was a pretty wild book. It reminded me a bit of Gossip Girl but in Paris and a lot less raunchy. It was way more suitable for younger teens and it had a lot more substance. I can't really say what the plot was to this one except that it was their first semester of schooling in Paris. The second book looks like it will have more of a storyline that this one kind of set it up for. I look forward to starting that one. =]

Overall, Beautiful Americans is a fun read full of lies, scandal, sex, and secrets. I don't think Lucy Silag left any subject untouched. It was a great book and I plan on diving into the next one as soon as possible!

Books Read In December

I wasn't planning on doing a recap of books that I read in December but I figured, why not? I don't think I read nearly as many books as some of the other months of the year but I did read some really good ones so I guess that makes up for it.

-Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
-Magic Under Glass by Jaclyn Dolamore
-Tangled by Carolyn Mackler
-The Dark Divine by Bree Despain
-The Lonely Hearts Club by Elizabeth Eulberg
-Hearts At Stake: The Drake Chronicles by Alyxandra Harvey
-Raiders' Ransom by Emily Diamand
-Fallen by Lauren Kate
-Beautiful Americans by Lucy Silag
-Wanderlust (Beautiful Americans #2) by Lucy Silag
-Revealers by Amanda Marrone
-Dawn by Kevin Brooks

I read 12 books in December which brought my total to 148 books in 2009, not including adult
books or YA that I read before starting my blog. So I probably read about 200 books total. =]

How many books did you read in 2009?

Contests Ending!

Don't forget that both of my contests end tonight at midnight and winners will be picked tomorrow. =]

After these end my blogoversary celebration will begin!

Fallen by Lauren Kate

Book: Fallen by Lauren Kate

Release date: December 8, 2009

Publisher: Delacorte

From: Publisher

Summary:
There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.
*****
Wow! Just wow! Fallen was another book I really wanted to like but wasn't sure that I would. It had a lot of mixed reviews but I finally decided to put all of those out of my mind and read the book for myself. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I loved it!

Fallen is a fallen angel story. Who would have guessed? =] This is only the second that I have ever read but I really hope for more in the future if they are anything like this one. Fallen was full of suspense, mystery, romance, and betrayals. And boy were there some unexpected betrayals. They were just so surprising and I love that.

Luce was a great heroine, except for the whole stalkerish thing in the beginning. It kind of creeped me out how obsessed she was with Daniel but in the end it all made sense. I think the thing I liked most about the character of Luce was how no matter what happened, I rooted for her to come out ahead. I genuinely liked her. And of course I loved Daniel. He was a bit of a jerk at first but he was also so mysterious and sexy. Just what every girl wants in their dream guy, right? Well, I mean without the jerk part.

One of the things that was so spectacular about Fallen was how quickly I was drawn into the story. Usually it takes me a while to get into a story but this one pulled me in from the very beginning and kept me reading until the bitter end. I wasn't disappointed by the ending, necessarily, it just left me with some unanswered questions and wanting so much more.

Overall, I do recommend Fallen. I also recommend doing what I did. If it sounds like something you might enjoy, ignore all the bad reviews and read it for yourself. It's worth it, or at least it was to me!
