Blog Tour: Overprotected Review

Book:  Overprotected
Author:  Jennifer Laurens
Release date:  April 29, 2011
Publisher:  Grove Creek
Pages:  234
Source:  Publisher/Teen Book Scene
Ashlyn: A lonely society princess living in New York City.

Daddy hired you to be my bodyguard.

Colin: Childhood enemy, now her protector.

Daddy thought I’d be safe. He thought I’d never fall in love. He thought he could keep me forever.

Charles: obsessed with keeping her safe, keeping her his, he hires the one person he knows she could never fall in love with: Colin.

Daddy was wrong.
Overprotected is my first Jennifer Laurens book and after that thrill ride I am definitely planning to read her other books.  Overprotected drew me in and I fell in love with the characters and their stories.  This is a great YA romance with some twists.

Ashlyn is not your typical teenager.  She would like to be but with her fathers worries over her protection, she never will be.  When her father fires her bodyguard Ashlyn believes that maybe she can talk him out of hiring someone else but things don't go as planned.  Instead, her dad hires her childhood enemy as her new bodyguard.  Ashlyn is immediately drawn to the man that Colin has become but will she ever be more than a job to him?

Oh my gosh!  So cute!  I adored Ashlyn and Colin.  Their relationship was not the usual one and I loved reading about them.  Ashlyn was naive and innocent but it was refreshing.  Colin was a bit mysterious and very protective.  Watching their relationship grow was the best part of the book but I did love the crazy family dynamics too.  You don't see a lot of that in YA today.

I expected just another YA romance but Overprotected was so much more than that.  There was a bit of suspense toward the end and I was on the edge of my seat.  I kind of expected what happened but I was still shocked, if that makes any sense.

Overall, Jennifer Laurens has written a wonderful book.  I definitely recommend this for all you romance lovers!  =)

First line:  I saw him and my heart started racing.

There are secrets behind the stone walls of Chateau de la Fortune, buried for centuries along with the mystery of who killed Raphael, the charming ghost who visits Caitlyn at night. But as Caitlyn unearths the history of the castle, nothing scares her as badly as the secret she learns about herself, and the reason she was chosen to come to the Fortune School.

And nothing breaks her heart as badly as falling in love with a dead guy.
Wake Unto Me is an absolutely extraordinary debut from Lisa Cach.  I wasn't sure what to expect when I started it so I was pleasantly surprised when I was immediately drawn into Caitlyn's world.  This is another one of those books that I know my review will not do justice to.

Caitlyn Monahan doesn't know what is wrong with her.  All she knows is that she does not fit in, not with her family, her friends, or her town in Oregon.  When she gets the chance to go to boarding school in France, she jumps at it.  Everything is not as it seems at the Fortune school though.  Caitlyn is having strange dreams but she doesn't mind because they bring her to Raphael.  But how can she be with Raphael?  Is he even real?  And if so, how does Caitlyn visit him in her dreams?

Where to begin?  I can honestly say that there was nothing about this book that I didn't like.  At first I was a little confused by Caitlyn but that cleared up very quickly.  I began to understand her and really like her.  She was confused and pretty alone.  She was very easy to like and want to read about.  Raphael was also great.  He was so sweet.  I really did like him and his story.  Amalia and Naomi were great friends to Caitlyn and they were both great characters with very fun personalities.

The story is what really got me.  I had no idea how everything would tie together in the end.  The mystery of that kept me reading.  Lisa Cach did a wonderful job tying it together in the end and I felt that all my questions were answered.

Overall, Wake Unto Me is a very original debut that I think will appeal to everyone.  I can't wait to see what's next from Lisa Cach!

Wither (Chemical Garden #1) by Lauren DeStefano

Book:  Wither (Chemical Garden #1)
Author:  Lauren DeStefano
Release date:  March 22, 2011
Publisher:  Simon & Schuster
Pages:  356
Source:  Publisher
What if you knew exactly when you would die?

Thanks to modern science, every human being has become a ticking genetic time bomb—males only live to age twenty-five, and females only live to age twenty. In this bleak landscape, young girls are kidnapped and forced into polygamous marriages to keep the population from dying out.

When sixteen-year-old Rhine Ellery is taken by the Gatherers to become a bride, she enters a world of wealth and privilege. Despite her husband Linden's genuine love for her, and a tenuous trust among her sister wives, Rhine has one purpose: to escape—to find her twin brother and go home.

But Rhine has more to contend with than losing her freedom. Linden's eccentric father is bent on finding an antidote to the genetic virus that is getting closer to taking his son, even if it means collecting corpses in order to test his experiments. With the help of Gabriel, a servant Rhine is growing dangerously attracted to, Rhine attempts to break free, in the limited time she has left.
Before I picked up Wither I was skeptical.  There were so many fabulous reviews and I figured I would be the one person who hated it.  Boy was I wrong.  I completely agree with every amazing review and now I am going to attempt to write my own.

Rhine Ellery never thought she would be one of the girls take by the Gatherers and sold into a polygamous marriage.  She always thought she was too smart for them.  She was wrong.  Now she is trapped in a marriage that she does not want and the only way out may be with her death.  That, or with the help of Gabriel, an attendant who doesn't remember what freedom was like but is willing to risk his life for a chance at it with Rhine.

Wow!  This book is so hard for me to review because of how mixed up I am about it right now (in a good way).  I have never read anything like Wither and I was kind of disturbed but I pretty much just loved it.  Lauren DeStefano went where a lot of other authors wouldn't dare and I applaud her for that.  Wither was a beautiful story and I know I will be recommending this one to a lot of people.

Rhine was one badass character.  She is my new favorite heroine.  She never gave up, no matter what.  She was brave, funny, and SMART!  I adored her.  Her sister wives, Cecily and Jenna, weren't bad but they are nothing like Rhine.  Jenna was very brave in her own way though and so was Cecily.  Gabriel was so sweet and cute.  I felt like he was only minor though because the story focused more on how Rhine didn't really need him to escape.  She was strong enough to do everything on her own.

Overall, Wither is fan-freaking-tastic.  I can't possibly describe how amazing it is so you must go check it out for yourself!

Disclaimer:  Definitely only for older teens.  Lots of mature content!!!

First line:  I wait.

Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck

Book:  Tiger's Curse (Tiger Saga #1)
Author:  Colleen Houck
Release date:  January 11, 2011
Publisher:  Splinter
Pages:  448
Source:  Publisher
Passion. Fate. Loyalty.

Would you risk it all to change your destiny?

The last thing Kelsey Hayes thought she'd be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world.

But that's exactly what happened.

Face-to-face with dark forces, spell-binding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.
Tiger's Curse starts off with a bang but it ended with a whimper.  I was really impressed in the beginning but that changed throughout the book.  I do think it sets things up for the next book but I think Colleen Houck could have done a much better job with it.

Kelsey Hayes had lots of plans for her summer.  None of them involved traveling to India to break a 300-year-old curse but that is exactly what she is doing.  With the help of Ren, a white tiger, and Mr. Kadam, Kelsey will face things she never thought possible.  She might be killed on this journey but that's something she's prepared for.  She's not prepared to fall in love but that's exactly what happens.

Kelsey was my biggest problem with this book.  I didn't like her.  She was whiny, afraid, contradictory, and just plain annoying at times.  She had no backbone.  She was a weak character that I could find nothing to like about.  Ren was okay as a character.  I loved him.  He was such a big, cuddly tiger.  I want one!  Although I don't recommend going out to adopt a white tiger.  Mr. Kadam was also a great character.  He was kind and sweet.  I look forward to more of his story in the next book.

The plot was the only thing that kept me reading at times.  It was very interesting and the Indian mythology was fascinating.  I do give Colleen Houck props for that.  While the characters were lacking, the story was not.

Overall, Tiger's Curse is one I recommend if you can get past the characters.  Maybe check it out from your library before buying a copy.  (Although the cover is gorgeous and you may want a copy just for that.)

First line:  The prisoner stood with his hands tied in front of him, tired, beaten, and filthy but with a proud back befitting his royal Indian heritage.

Waiting On Wednesday: Uncommon Criminals

Book:  Uncommon Criminals (Heist Society #2) by Ally Carter
Release date:  June 21, 2011
Publisher:  Hyperion Book
Katarina Bishop has worn a lot of labels in her short life. Friend. Niece. Daughter. Thief. But for the last two months she’s simply been known as the girl who ran the crew that robbed the greatest museum in the world. That’s why Kat isn’t surprised when she’s asked to steal the infamous Cleopatra Emerald so it can be returned to its rightful owners.

There are only three problems. First, the gem hasn’t been seen in public in thirty years. Second, since the fall of the Egyptian empire and the suicide of Cleopatra, no one who holds the emerald keeps it for long, and in Kat’s world, history almost always repeats itself. But it’s the third problem that makes Kat’s crew the most nervous and that is simply… the emerald is cursed.

Kat might be in way over her head, but she’s not going down without a fight. After all she has her best friend—the gorgeous Hale—and the rest of her crew with her as they chase the Cleopatra around the globe, dodging curses, realizing that the same tricks and cons her family has used for centuries are useless this time.

Which means, this time, Katarina Bishop is making up her own rules.
I loved the first book in this series so I am very excited to check this one out.  I loved Ally Carter's Gallagher Girls series and this one is one of my new favorites.  I also really love this cover.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

Blog Tour: Character Interview: Charles (Overprotected)

Today I am so lucky to have an interview with Charles from Overprotected!
KBB:  Ever since the incident when Ashlyn was little, you have hired bodyguards to protect her. Were there ever any other incidents over the years that reinforced your beliefs that she needed to be protected?

C:  That's confidential.

KBB:  As Ashlyn grew up were you more afraid of losing her altogether or of her being out of your life, of her own free will?

C:  It's preposterous to imply that I don't want her to have her own life. I do. In my line of work I deal with unsavory characters. I'm only looking out for her welfare.

KBB:  What were your plans for Ashlyn when she went away to college?

C:  To have a bodyguard, of course. My men can be invisible.

KBB:  What made you think Colin would be the perfect replacement bodyguard for Ashlyn?

C:  His father is a trusted friend. Colin comes from the most impeccable family background. And, he has an interest in law enforcement. That appealed to me.

KBB:  Did you really think Ashlyn would never find a guy? Were you prepared for if she did?

C:  She's seeing Colin now, yes, but I hardly call that 'finding a guy'. I'm certain, once she starts college and immerses herself in her studies this 'relationship' with Colin will end.

KBB:  Anything you would like to tell us about yourself and your worries for your daughter?

C:  I'm not worried for her, I want her safe. Ashlyn's capable of many things, but why should she have to be concerned about her safety when she has me?

Readers if you would like to find out more about Charles and Ashlyn check out Overprotected!  You can find more info about the book at Jennifer Lauren's website!

Oh and don't forget to check out the rest of the stops on the tour!

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride

Book:  Hold Me Closer, Necromancer
Author:  Lish McBride
Release date:  October 12, 2010
Publisher:  Henry Holt and Co.
Pages:  352
Source:  Bookstore
Sam leads a pretty normal life. He may not have the most exciting job in the world, but he’s doing all right—until a fast food prank brings him to the attention of Douglas, a creepy guy with an intense violent streak.

Turns out Douglas is a necromancer who raises the dead for cash and sees potential in Sam. Then Sam discovers he’s a necromancer too, but with strangely latent powers. And his worst nightmare wants to join forces . . . or else.

With only a week to figure things out, Sam needs all the help he can get. Luckily he lives in Seattle, which has nearly as many paranormal types as it does coffee places. But even with newfound friends, will Sam be able to save his skin?
Lish McBride's debut novel is absolutely fantastic.  It is such a fresh, fun story.  I couldn't stop reading it and now I'm dying for more.  Sequel, please?

Samhain (Sam) Lacroix has never been normal but he's never known just quite how different he really is.  He probably would have remained clueless if he hadn't broken some creeps taillight.  Too bad he's not just a normal creep.  Douglas Montgomery is a necromancer and he knows that Sam is too.  He can't have that.  He now wants Sam's power and he will do anything to get it.  Will Sam find a way to defeat Douglas or will he lose everything right when he's finally beginning to make sense of his life?

The characters in this book are some of the best I have ever read.  I adored them all.  Sam was the biggest smart-ass but he had a soft side.  Ramon was an amazing friend and super funny.  Brooke and Frank were quite odd but in the best possible way.  Brid was bad-ass and Ashley was the funniest ghost.  There were more but I can't possibly go into detail about them all.  The rest were just as awesome, though.

The plot was very fast-paced and fun.  There weren't really any surprises to this story but I was okay with that.  It wasn't predictable though.  It was such a unique story.  Necromancy is something you don't read much about but it is a fascinating subject.

Overall, Hold Me Closer, Necromancer is a new favorite of mine.  I will be recommending it to everyone I know.  Word of warning, though:  you will laugh out loud and get some strange looks if you happen to be in a public place.  =)

First line:  I stood in front of today's schedule still holding my skateboard, still drenched from the ride over, and still desperately wishing that I hadn't dropped out of college.
